Busy Beavers in Wai-iti

Mia is so proud of her Mermaid House. She painted, decorated, designed characters and is now due to share her creation with her classmates. Well done Mia!

Lots of designing, negotiating, taking turns, sharing, problem-solving and working collaboratively. Amazing team effort boys!

Week 9 1st April-5th April

Wow Week 9, this term is nearly coming to an end. We hope you have had an enjoyable weekend with your family.

A lot of children in Wai-iti were very tired on Friday, we encourage early nights and lots of filling food to keep your wee people going until the end of term.

We finish on Friday 12th April at 3pm.

  • Thank you to those families who have been donating various crafty materials for our projects, please continue to send in any fabrics, buttons, ribbons... that you no longer need.
  • We also continue to need boxes for our box construction area, your recycled boxes are like 'gold' in Wai-iti, thank you.

  • Many children have started there very first project in Wai-iti this term. The children have to come up with a plan, record what their project will look like and what materials they might need. Next they spend days or weeks working on their project and then they reflect and share with the class.
  • Please feel free to have a conversation with your wee person at home about their Project and what stage they are up too. If they haven't started a project yet you may wish to share ideas at home and encourage them to get involved.
  • So far we have had boats, planes, Beanie Boo houses, cushions, Mermaid houses and many more...

Hi All

Kirsty and I had decided to stop swimming so the weather then decided to get hot again!! It is meant to be very hot tomorrow so we will be swimming if the children bring their togs.
Many thanks

Hi All

There will be a mufti day tomorrow (Tuesday). Please bring a wrapped bottle to the office. This mufti day is to support the PTA's Quiz night so maybe you can win back your bottle, if your going!!

Week 8.....Hope you have all had a lovely relaxing weekend and are making the most of this settled autumn weather.

If you haven't already come and see the outdoor library set up under the trees by the Tillman Avenue entrance. A great space for a quiet read. You'll see lots of teachers there!

Kirsty and I feel our class swimming is coming to an end. There still will be lunch time swim on a Monday for the children who are super keen but there will be no more class swimming.

Please let us and  the office know if your child falls into any of these categories. The school phone number is 03 3529208.

We know children love to bring special toys to school to share but we are really aware of the heart break if toys go missing or get broken. We are trying to schedule a toy day for Wai-iti towards the end of term so the children can share their favourite toy. In the meantime, please keep toys at home.

Our trip to Tūranga links beautifully with our Social Sciences topic for this term. Wai-iti means 'little stream'. We are going to explore the meaning and significance behind our name and the other names being used at Waimairi School in the next few weeks.

Tūranga and Botanical Gardens Trip

Here are some photos of our day at the library and Botanical Gardens. Some are a little abstract so get the children to explain them.  (Hint: the staircase is meant to look like the one from Harry Potter)

Week 7

- Thank you for your patience and understanding on Friday 15th March while we were in lockdown. We hope you have had a quiet, calm and safe weekend with your family.

-Wednesday 20th March is our School Cross Country. We plan to leave school approximately 11.30, enjoy lunch at St James Park and participate in a short 400metre run. Any changes to this we will let you know during the week.

-Tracy and myself both have CRT this week. Just a reminder that on these day's children will bring home a Poem instead of a Reading book.

-We have now started 'Project' work in Wai-iti, children are very excited to plan, make and reflect on a project of their choice. If you have any of the following at home we would love to make use of them in Wai-iti:

-boxes, any shapes and sizes, (shoe boxes, Weetbix boxes, muesli bar boxes, egg cartons...
-buttons, ribbons, material, wool, beads, stuffing...

Thank you

Fabulous Turanga and Botanic Gardens Trip

A special thank you to all those parent helpers who volunteered their time to support our
Wai-iti children on our school trip. We couldn't have done this trip without you.

We had a fabulous day which included: a library tour, robots, lego and duplo creations, story time, an indoor slide and lots of fun with our friends.

Next we walked through our city and saw lots of building going on and we talked about our special ChCh landmarks, such as The Square, Art Gallery, Museum, Art Centre...

We then had a picnic in the Botanic Gardens and finished with a play on the playground. Although the most popular activity was building huts with hay bails, fern branches, sticks and planks of wood.

Here are a few photos of our amazing day:

Turanga and Botanic Gardens Trip

Please ensure your child is at school by 8.40am tomorrow morning.

(For your information Tracy and myself will be in a Staff Meeting until approximately 8.30am)

The day looks quite chilly, so a warm named jacket would be a good idea. We have a walk between the library and the gardens so suitable shoes are required.

We are looking forward to a fabulous day!!

Any questions or thoughts, do let me know!

Sarah (Louis mum 🙂) 021990857

Weather forecast for the week is looking pretty good for the start of the week and a little cloudy on our trip day. Please ensure your child has a sun hat as they are required right up until the end of term.

Swimming days-Monday (lunch time), Tuesday and Friday

Tūranga and Botanical Gardens - Thursday 14 March
We can't wait! You should have received a paper notice on Friday outlining for you the days timetable. If you can't come on the trip but are able to come to Botanical Gardens and eat lunch with us we should be there by 12.00pm. Please check the school website if for any reason we have to cancel on the day. The learning for our inquiry has focussed on the children themselves and their families and this trip sets the scene for us to look at our community. In particular, why at Waimairi we have the names we have for our learning areas and more importantly how we have been able to use those names.

Friendship List-
Last week the friendship list was sent home. It gives you, as the extended whānau of Wai-iti, to get in touch with each other and have some fun!!

Book Roster and Cleaning table Roster-
Thank you so much for your readiness to help with these tasks. We are really so appreciative.

Have a wonderful week.

We are very excited about this trip so please lock this date in your calendar!!

Reading Folders
Well done to all those children who are bringing in their reading folder each day and placing it in the correct box. Remember the blue box are Kirsty's readers and the red box are Mrs Campbell's readers.

Enjoy the warm week.

Lizzie and Kaia create with play dough!

Lizzie and Kaia are practising their pastry skills with play dough. Lizzie's been rolling and cutting out and Kaia's made some interesting looking pizza look alikes.

Detail is the Word.

Mitchell and Josef have created an amazing detailed picture of a house..infact a whole street. Detail is one of our key words in Wai-iti and this is a great example of a detailed drawing. Great work boys.

The Block Challenge

Kaden, Zaaier, Alex and Matteo took up the block challenge.....great effort boys.

The Shopping Game

This group had a great time playing the shopping game......boys can clearly shop too!
